The company was founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini to build refined grand touring cars and gained world-wide acclaim in 1966 for the Miura sports coupe, which established mid-engine design as the standard layout for high-performance cars of the era. Ferruccio had purchased a Ferrari in 1958 and went on to own several more, being fond of them but considering them too noisy and rough to be proper road cars, so the Lamborghini aim was for refinement, power and comfort.
Although purchased by Audi AG in 1998, assembly of Lamborghini cars still continues in the small Italian township of Sant’Agata Bolognese – the company’s ancestral home. The single factory there produces less than 3,000 cars per year – Coupe or Roadster versions of either the V10-powered Gallardo or the V12-powered Murcielago, both stunning to behold if not entirely practical!
