Subaru was effectively founded in 1953 by Fuji Heavy Industries, with the first Subaru car appearing in 1954 – originally pronounced ‘Sumaru’ meaning ‘to get together’ or ‘to tie together’. Subaru is internationally known for the boxer style engine used in most of its vehicles and also the all-wheel drivetrain layout first introduced in 1972 – as well as turbocharged versions of their passenger saloon cars, such as the Impreza WRX. Subaru have also achieved notable success in the World Rally Championship with cars prepared and run by Prodrive, the highly successful British Motorsport team.
