The DB11 succeeds the DB9 as Aston Martin’s flagship V12 GT, taking on cars like the Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe, Bentley GTC and Ferrari F12. Aston’s DB lineage, named after one-time owner David Brown, stretches right back to 1950 and includes the iconic DB5 of Goldfinger fame. But the DB11 is the first all-new one since 2003. And if you’re wondering what happened to DB10, that was reserved for a special re-bodied V8 Vantage used in 2015’s Bond film, Spectre.

At 610 horsepower, this naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 is the most powerful engine ever put into production by Audi. It revs 20 percent quicker than its predecessor, spinning from idle to its 8500-rpm redline in 0.66 second. The pedestal it’s bolted to, a V10 Plus, blitzes to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and wails a stirring soprano aria in the process.

Welcome to the future; this is the new BMW i8, a hybrid electric two-door 2+2 sports car the likes of which the world hasn’t seen before. Despite the eco-conscious demeanour, the i8 develops 357bhp and 570Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds thanks to its sophisticated four-wheel drive chassis and lightweight carbon-fibre construction. Those numbers pit the BMW very much up against the Porsche 911 and Audi R8.

Ferrari may have been founded on a series of V12-powered cars, but some of its most successful models were those fitted with a mid-rear-mounted V8. And so it is with the Ferrari 458 Italia – the name meaning 4.5-litres and eight cylinders, with Italia thrown it at the end in homage to its home country. It was hailed by none other than Jeremy Clarkson as one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever made.
