Ariel Atom Cup
Originally launched in the 1990s, the Atom is now an established motoring icon, turning heads both for its looks and the fact it is as exhilarating a car as you could wish to drive. Today, the range extends from 245bhp base model of the car through to a 350bhp version. Without exception, each model offers a uniquely thrilling driving experience that is, as its best, unmatched for thrills and rawness this side of a superbike.
Aston Martin DB9
If it's absolute class you want from a supercar, then the Aston Martin DB9 takes some beating. The British-built V12 engined car can be considered more of a quick GT car than a pin-sharp racer, but there's no doubt its relaxed approach hold plenty of appeal. It continues to be a fast, luxurious, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive coupe that will carry two people and their luggage on long journeys at high speed in absolute comfort.
The Audi R8 is a supercar from a dying breed. As makers add turbochargers to their cars to meet ever-stricter emissions targets, the naturally aspirated engine is falling out of favour, and in some ways the R8 is a fantastic last hurrah. From its deep growl at low revs through to the thrilling metallic howl as you close in on the 8,500rpm red line, it sounds every bit as exciting as you’d expect from a supercar.
A traditional mid-engined two-seat supercar, it employs technology honed in F1 racing to make it one of the most exciting road cars on sale. While similar in proportion to the 360, the F430 is more angular, the rear end styling borrowed from the Enzo supercar while the distinctive twin nostril treatment at the front is inspired by Ferrari’s 1960s Grand Prix racers.
Forget the idea of performance you are used to. The Aventador has been engineered to revolutionize this concept and establish a new benchmark of super sports cars and beyond. This car aims to bring the future forward. This is a true supercar legend in the making, which combines the tradition of the Lamborghini brand with a level of innovation which takes the House of the Raging Bull to hitherto unexplored territory.
Some cars only entertain when they break traction; the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 entertains the moment you turn the key. In fact, scrub that – the LP 560 entertains the moment you look at it. This is one of the automotive experiences of our times.
The fastest car down an unknown road. The R35 Nissan GT-R is Nissan’s finest hour. A four-seater two-door with a decent boot and four-wheel drive that’s mightily rear-biased. Bolt that to a suite of electronic cleverness that’ll boggle whatever’s left of your mind, and you’ve got a legend that reliably minces cars twice the price. A true supercar beater!
Porsche 997 Turbo
Probably the most iconic sports car ever made, the Porsche 911 has set class standards for handling and performance for years. The rear-engined layout that made early 911s so tricky to handle has been retained, but it’s been refined over the generations so the car now has the stability to match its jaw-dropping performance.
