The company was first founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, an Austro-Hungarian engineer also known for designing the first Volkswagen, but did not actually build any cars under its own name until 1939 - even then using many Beetle components. The company profile increased dramatically after the launch of the iconic 911 model in 1963 and Porsche has since been widely renowned for its range of high quality high-performance vehicles. The Porsche and Volkswagen companies have recently agreed to merge in 2011 but will no doubt retain their separate identities.
